Penicuik House in Midlothian was designed and built in the 1760s for the Clerk family, who had already been living on the estate for nearly a hundred years. It was one of the finest houses in the country until a fire in 1899 destroyed the roof and interiors, leaving the once-magnificent building in ruins. The family gathered on the lawn as the sun rose, surrounded by their paintings, piano and potted plants.
